This week, Cardiff University signed the Africa Charter for Transformative Research Collaborations, meaning that all four GW4 Alliance universities (Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter) are now signatories. PARC Academic Director Leon Tikly said:
‘This is a wonderful milestone for the Charter – it has come so far since its launch in Namibia and we are delighted to see it fully embraced by our local association of South West universities, and to working with them further on Charter principles.’
Cardiff’s President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Wendy Larner signed the Charter at a ceremony at the University on Thursday 2nd October, which also marked the launch of a Wellcome Discovery Award to support providing sustainable MRI solutions in Africa.

The GW4 Alliance brings together Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter – four of the most research-intensive and innovative universities in the UK, which are now making an institutional-level commitment to equity in research partnerships with Africa by signing the Charter.
The timing of its members becoming Africa Charter signatories appropriately coincides with GW4 launching its new Re-Culture: Research Culture Change Programme – a pilot programme that explores enhanced research culture through skills development, practical knowledge-sharing and networking.
We look forward to working with all Africa Charter signatories as the community of practice around transformative research partnerships grows and develops.
