John Moyes Lessells travel scholarships 

Royal Society of Edinburgh 

These enable graduate engineers to pursue studies on any aspect of engineering, including computer and software engineering, in any part of the world except the UK. Scholarships are worth £1,250 each per month for up to six months.

African diaspora support to African universities programme – visiting fellowships 

Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa 

This supports African scholars in the diaspora in spending time in an African university to undertake specific academic activities aimed at strengthening teaching and research in either the social sciences, humanities or higher education studies. Fellowships are worth up to USD 250 per day for visits between two weeks and three months.

Science Diplomacy Fund 

Dutch Research Council | Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek 

This supports scientific activities organised with researchers in countries with which the Netherlands wishes to intensify diplomatic relations. Grants are worth up to €20,000 each to contribute to material costs, travel and accommodation costs.

International climate protection initiative – themed calls 

German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety | Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz und nukleare Sicherheit 

These support collaborative projects on climate protection and the conservation of biodiversity. Grants are worth between €5 million and €30m for up to eight years.

Fellowship programme for people of African descent 

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights 

This provides participants with an intensive learning opportunity to strengthen participants’ skills to contribute to the protection and promotion of civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of people of African descent. Fellowships cover travel, health insurance, accommodation and living expenses for the programme.

COMING SOON: Edgar Pam fellowship 

Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining 

This opportunity will be available soon. The next call is expected to open in December 2020. The following information is subject to change. This fellowship enables young graduates from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa or the UK to pursue postgraduate study in the UK within the fields of minerals and mining. The fellowship is tenable for one year and is worth up to £2,000.

Microsoft Corporation 

This supports PhD students in computing-related fields in their 3rd year or beyond at universities in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Each Microsoft scholarship consists of a bursary of USD 15,000 for one year.

This supports research collaboration between researchers in Switzerland and South Africa. The maximum project duration is three years.

Gerald Averay Wainwright research grants for Near Eastern archaeology 

University of Oxford 

These encourage the study of non-classical archaeology and general history as deduced from comparative archaeology of any country or countries of Northern Africa and the Near East. The grant is worth up to £4000.

Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy 

This recognises research and innovation in support of economic development and social welfare in Newton Fund partner countries. The total budget is £1 million for one award per partner country and an additional prize for the project that best demonstrates knowledge and partnership working.

African wildlife rapid action grants 

International Union for Conservation of Nature 

These support civil society organisations and public entities engaged in the conservation of threatened species in South Africa in carrying out urgent conservation measures at local level to protect the species and their habitat. Grants are worth up to €100,000 each for a maximum period of 12 months.

Africa fellowship programme 

World Bank 

This enables young African scholars to spend a minimum of six months at the World Bank in Washington, DC, or country offices, getting hands-on experience in development work. Fellowships each include coverage of consultant fees, round-trip economy airfare and worker’s compensation insurance.

Science by Women Programme 

Women for Africa Foundation | Fundacion Mujeres por Africa 

This enables African women researchers to spend six months in one of the participating research centres in Spain. Fellowships cover a return flight and a monthly allowance of €2,400 towards accommodation, personal expenses and insurance.
